About Govind Singh

Hailing from the lush green hills from the Kumaon region of Uttrakhand, Govind was raised by a hardworking single mother who kept him motivated and encouraged him to work with honesty and diligence. He completed his schooling from Pithoragarh and followed his elder brother to Chandigarh for the sake of employment. However life had other plans for this meeky pahadi boy. He completed his undergraduate studies at Punjab University, where he won a gold medal for ranking first. He continued and was awarded a gold medal for finishing first in both his M.A. and M.Phil. courses. After completing his Higher education from Punjab University Chandigarh, Govind pursued his Ph.D. in Hindi Literature. During his studies, he developed a greater interest in the influence of the media, which inspired him to pursue a career in journalism. He spent almost thirty years as a mainstream journalist.

Dr. Govind Singh's work profile ranges from being active in Print Media and Electronic Media to being a mass communication academician. He worked in many Newspapers and Magazines in Print Media, as the editor in National dailies, like NavBharat Times, Amar Ujala, Hindustan and Magazines like Outlook (Hindi), Span (American Embassy), Kadambani (HT Media). He was also active in electronic media and also has experience in Radio, where he worked as Head of Research in TV News channels like Zee News and AajTak. Despite having an established career in mass communication, he had a deep desire to educate. It prompted him to pursue a career in academia as a visiting faculty initially and Professor of Journalism later.
As an Academician he had opportunities to teach students from different Institutes for more than 13 years. He taught in University of Delhi (South Campus) as a visiting faculty. He was the founder of the Department of Journalism and Media studies in Uttarakhand Open University, Haldwani, during his service in the arena of academics he also held other responsible positions like controller of Examination, Director of Community Radio- Hello Haldwani 91.2 FM and Registrar of UOU Haldwani.
He served as the Dean of School of Mass Communication and New media in Central University of Jammu, later he Joined the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (Delhi) as the Dean of Academics and Course Director of Radio and TV journalism. He eventually retired from that position. He is very loved and revered by his students, who not just respect him as a college professor but also lo ok up to him as a Guru.
Dr. Govind Singh is recipient of many awards for his illustrious contribution in Media, his service in education and his work for highlighting culture of Uttarakhand.
